Exogenic Processes
Exogenic processes are external processes, such as wind and rain, occurring on or above the Earth's surface. Where land is less covered and more exposed to exogenic processes, erosion will be very evident. Beach sediment blown away by wind is known as sand drift, while storm water erosion refers to processes of rain removing beach deposits. These processes will slowly transport the sand off the coast into different areas, mainly large water bodies such as rivers, lakes and oceans, gradually wearing out the land. During the 2009 dust storm in Sydney, shown in Fig 1.1, approximately 2.54 million tonnes of sand was removed off the coast of northern Sydney.

Glossary
Exogenic Processes - External Processes that are formed or occur on the Earth's surface
Sand Drift - Process of erosion resulting from wind causing the movement of sand
Storm Water Erosion - Removal of sand when rain flows over the ground, collecting and moving sand
Beach Sediment - Particles of matter which lie on coastal areas
Dust Storm - Strong wind carrying different particles, such as soil and sand, over a large area
Vulnerability - State of being easily susceptible to a particular risk
